‘A family can be defined as a married heterosexual couple and their children’. How have social scientists challenged this kind of conventional definition of the UK family? Since there are lots of different perceptions or even conflicts on family life, the sociologist is challenging greatly of the family (Cheal, D. 1991:1). The changes in family living and household composition are mainly concerned as a contemporary core. (Jagger, G. and Wright, C. 1999:1). According to Sherratt and Hughes, although families are fluid and diverse, the divisions’ persistence and family’s inequalities still exist (Fergusson, R. and Hughes, G. 2004:75). It might raise the number of never-married couple because cohabitation takes long time, they would be used to cohabit or they are not willing to get married (McRae, S. 1999:179). There are more than two thirds of citizens who are 18 years old or over in the United Kingdom think they could be happy and fulfilled in life without a spouse (Directgov 2 July 2010). Since the social values changed a lot, same-sex relationships arose recently (O’Donnell, K. 1999:77). Lesbian and gay families were formed one of the diversity of structure in family. O’Donnell also suggested that homosexual families increased noticeably and there is a challenge directly to be threatened the traditional family life. Although the United Kingdom is a conservative country, it may not a barrier for lesbian or gay to be in a relationship (O’Donnell, K. 1999:84).
